Since this is one of my favorite MZX games and noone else has reviewed it yet, I thought I would. In "Smiley RPG" (an RPG of course), you seccessfully "audition" to become the hero needed to stop a madman from blowing up the planet. With your two friends, you make your way through many different kinds of obstacles, including very good and creative puzzles, a sidescrolling level, and (of course) classic RPG battles. This game also makes a ingame-mentioned point of following RPG clich?s (The rules of RPGs) as an additional theme. This game is also pretty funny, especially the title screen sequence. The only real downpoint is that some parts can be frustrating and/or take quite a few times to beat (Remember to save the game often). There was one puzzle similar to "Lights Out" that I eventually gave up on and used the editor to get past. Despite these difficulties, this game is an outstanding addition to any MZX player's collection.

Since I didn't relise I have not reviewed this yet and BR reminded me, this thing gets a taste of my evil. Smiley RPG is an RPG whereas you play as smilies. The game start you off fighting some evil guy straight away, afterwards you are off to explore the world map. The game is pretty linear however this game does have it flaws. First off there is no form of levelling up whatsoever, you just get stronger every time you defeat a boss, next off it seems the only way to actually defeat the boss is simply buy lots of healing items however money itself is also somewhat limited as well. The game also features a large amount of puzzles, whilst some are easy many of them can easily become frustrating, in ways most of the challenge comes from the puzzles. The graphics are actually decent for its time as is the music, which is a plus. However the battles are somewhat fixed and can quickly get boring, the puzzles can be very frustrating. Unless you are easily frustrated go ahead and try it. However otherwise this game is merely average and 5 stars is far too much for a game like this.

A madman threatens to blow up the world unless paid 2 billion bucks. Any aspiring heroes will be paid 2 billion bucks to take down the madman.

...waitasec. If the reward is as much as the ransom, then why not just pay the ransom? Because there'd be no game otherwise. No go save the world!

This is Smiley RPG. It's a generic RPG game, and it's fully aware of this fact. It kicks off with you in an easy RPG battle, then your two friends join you because (almost) every RPG has a party traveling with the hero. What follows is a linear journey full of puzzles, RPG battles, and constant lampshading of RPG conventions. I swear, Mandy browsed TVTropes long before there was a TVTropes.

Graphics are bright and colorful, showcasing the happy generic RPG world. Music is good too, but there aren't much sound effects. Gameplay consists of journeying through various small challenges including a maze, sidescrollers, driving, ricochet panels, and puzzles. To be honest, there's not really much RPG in this so-called RPG game. There are only four RPG battles, no random encounters at all, no experience system (you just level up after a battle), and magic is literally bestowed upon your party from out of nowhere. Only the theme, the generic story, and the conventions are RPG-related. It still plays fine mind you, but it's just not much of an RPG from a gameplay standpoint.

Story is as generic as it can be. Save the world, form a party, adventure through puzzles and (not much) battles, fight the big bad guy in an alternate dimension, and poke fun at RPG tropes all the while. It's not a serious game.

Overall, Smiley RPG is a fun little game to play at least once. The fact that it keeps making fun of RPG rules could get tiring after a while, but keep in mind that the RPG conventions it mocks are from over a decade ago (though admittedly, some of it still applies today). You won't find a true RPG here, but you will find a silly game that has fun with itself.
