the first mzx shooter ever, and it's not too bad. i don't remember any plot to it, but it's pretty much a run-of-the-mill mzx shooter. difficult at many points, but still playable. it also had a nice selection of weapons and some decent textures.
i give it a 3 because of what it accomplished and because it's worth playing once or twice.

Assault, released at the end of the 90s by Eon Entertainment, was MegaZeux's first ever 3D shooter.

Created during the Spider versions, this game was a very bold experiment for the time, featuring a variety of weapons and multiple wall/floor textures before MZMs and sprites were ever introduced. It is also a fairly long game, featuring twelve levels to blow through in total.

Though I'm sure this blew MZXers away back then, the novelty wears off very quickly, and once it does, you find that the game itself just plain blows. All the power put into making the graphics means the game is incredibly slow and almost unplayable, and you have extremely limited visibility and movement, which is a big problem when you have hordes of enemies on you. To make matters worse, the graphics and SAMs themselves, as is par for the course for Eon's games, are not the least bit pleasing to my eyes and ears, which is a HUGE problem when your game has such a heavy focus on graphics to begin with.

This is worth taking a look at just for the novelty, and it gets an extra star for effort, but if you're looking for an old 3D shooter that's actually playable, I'd recommend ASCII Robowars 3D instead.
